Firing RAKU @JoWelchPhoto (73).jpg

Raku Workshops

Raku workshops are held most months during the year. In the three hour session, you will glaze and fire several pots and be able to take them home with you. Planting your pots with succulents is an optional extra. Using low melt glazes on previously biscuit-fired pots, we gas-fire your pots in a primitive outdoors kiln to 1000 degrees centigrade, remove the red hot vessels and plunge them into metal buckets of sawdust. These provide a reducing atmosphere, bringing out metallic oxides from the glazes and smoking black the unglazed areas. The pyrotechnics are exciting, the process fascinating and the results unpredictably awesome. Many participants find Raku seriously addictive and return for more!
